The family home since 1937

Background

I was born in Waikino, a tiny rural settlement in the Thames Valley.  My father, uncle and grandfather were dairy, sheep and beef farmers.  I attended the primary school in Waikino (roll of approx. 9 children) and thereafter Waihi Intermediate School, and then Mt Albert Grammar School in Auckland, where I was Dux in 1980.

I was admitted to the Bar in 1985 and spent 33 years working as a business lawyer at the leading New Zealand law firm of Simpson Grierson.

Experience

I was a partner in the Commercial Department of Simpson Grierson for 26 years and led a team of 12 business lawyers and legal administrators that contained specialists in the legal aspects of helping small and mid-sized businesses grow, sales and marketing, food, beverage and dietary supplements and sports, venues, entertainment and events. The team's expertise included all areas of advertising and promotions, sponsorship, all aspects of direct marketing and direct selling law, compliance, distribution, supply, consumer protection law (fair trading, consumer guarantees and privacy), marketing, promotions and on–line trading and customer interaction.

My team stayed connected with the industries we served through linkages with

·         The Marketing Association of New Zealand

·         NZ Food and Grocery Council

·         Direct Selling Association of NZ

·         Direct Selling Association of Australia

·         New Zealand Beverage Council

·         Australian Food and Grocery Council

The team I led also advised forestry and wood products companies on acquisitions and joint ventures through to operational contracts and helped with many Overseas Investment Office applications.

Since 1999 I have held Board roles in the public and private sectors, including facilities ownership and management (eg Regional Facilities Auckland and Dunedin Venues), destination marketing (Tourism NZ), destination management, business development, investment attraction (Rotorua Economic Development Ltd), economic development supporting infrastructure (Rotorua Airport Company), marketing, events, consumer products and services.

I am a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors, hold a Certificate in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors and a Certificate in the Fundamentals of Management from Columbia Business School.

From 2018 I've decided to slow down and work for myself for up to three days a week, while retaining the benefit of access to an extensive legal support network.

The rest of the time I will be taking classes in music and nutrition
